Kyu Belt Grading Requirements


Students of LFK will grade though the Kyu Grades from 10th Kyu down to 1st Kyu. Each grading will be based on specific Katas that they must learn in training and specific punches, kicks, blocks and stances.

The reward for passing each Kyu grades is a change in belt colour. The belt order is White, Yellow, Orange, Red, Green, Blue, Purple,  Brown, Brown with a single white stipe, Brown with a single black stripe then the black belt.


  • Only members holding a current LFK licence and are actively training at least twice per month are entitled to grade.


  • Students will be eligible to grade providing they have fulfilled all technical requirements and have been invited by a Senior chief Instructors.
  • To Qualify for a grading, as a minimum you must:

             Hold a strong stance with your technique and combinations.

             Have control and awareness during Sparring and self-defense.

             Show a good attitude, show respect to all the students around you, and share your training practises.

             Adhere to the LFK dojo rules & etiquette.


  • A minimum of 15 sessions shall be attended between gradings.


  • Students who fail Kyu grades may re-grade  for free. A second failure would incur a new grading test fee.


  • There are no age restrictions for Kyu gradings.


  • The minimum period between 3rd Kyu to 2nd Kyu and 2nd Kyu to is six months.


  • The minimum period between 1st Kyu and 1st Dan is 9 months.


  • The minimum periods between Dan Gradings are:

             1st Dan to 2nd Dan - 2 years

             2nd Dan to 3rd Dan - 3 years

             4th Dan onwards is awarded based on length of active training but is usually at a minimum of 5 year intervals

  •  There are no age restrictions for grading up to 1st Dan. The minimum age for attempting 2nd Dan is 18.
