Dojo Rules and Etiquette

The three most important maxims of Karate are:

  • Karate begins and ends with courtesy (respect).
  • Karate polishes the spirit (refinement).
  • There is no first attack in Karate (restraint).

All students must obey all dojo rules. These rules are critical to your mental and physical training.

Be punctual and ready to start. At the session start times, you should be in your karategi and ready to start.

Wear your karategi properly, it should always be neat and clean.

NEVER wash your belt.

Hygiene is important. Keep yourself clean with toenails and fingernails clipped and trimmed.

Do not wear jewellery of any kind. Wedding rings and newly pierced earrings can be taped to the skin.

Do not chew gum or have food in your mouth while on the dojo floor.

Mobiles phones should be switched off or to silent.

Karate techniques should only be used for self-defence, as a last resort, and then only to the extent necessary. It is best to avoid a fight. If confronted, escape if possible.

Bullying, harassment and abuse of any kind will not be tolerated.

OBSERVE ALL TRADITION IN THE DOJO:

All students must Rei (bow) upon entering and leaving the dojo to the most senior person.

All students must Rei when addressed by or receiving an instruction from a senior grade and to your partner when starting and completing an exercise.

Students must line up in grade order when called.

Always refer to senior ranks by their title: ie, Sensei, ect..

Exercise sincerely entering in the spirit of Lancing Freestyle Karate by exercising in accordance with Karate principles and not relying solely on strength.

Remain quiet and attentive in the dojo even when you are not in class. Do not sit or lie idly on the floor. Never interfere with others that are exercising. Your behaviour should never be disruptive to the class.

Always be courteous in demeanour and helpful to all grades. Without mutual respect Karate can not be passed on.

Have fun and train well
